Short answer: The 2016–2017 ILX uses an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT: an automatic that uses two computer-controlled clutches instead of a torque converter). A bump or clunk as it downshifts from 2nd to 1st while you slow to a stop is a known issue. Honda service bulletin 17-015 adds a software update and a clutch break-in procedure. Owners on AcuraZine said the update made a big difference.
Symptom: A bump, clunk or jerk right before stopping, a hard 2–1 downshift, or a small lurch at very low speed.
What to check first
- Ask the dealer whether bulletin 17-015 was done on your VIN.
- Know what's normal. A DCT can feel slightly different at very low speed than a regular automatic. Members on AcuraZine said small tach bounces are normal.
- If it gets worse or you get a warning light, have it checked for codes.
- If you just had battery work done, the transmission may need to re-learn.
Likely causes
- Transmission and engine software (bulletin 17-015). Honda's bulletin 17-015 says a 2016–2017 ILX or 2015–2017 TLX 4-cylinder DCT may have a bump or hard shift when coming to a stop, and fixes it with a software update and clutch break-in.
- Clutch learning after battery or software work. The clutch break-in procedure in the bulletin helps the transmission re-learn clutch engagement.
What it usually costs
Owners on AcuraZine said the update took about 20 minutes. It was often done under warranty. Ask the dealer before paying.
Is it safe to keep driving?
A small bump when stopping is usually a comfort issue, not a safety issue. If the car lurches forward, hesitates to move from a stop, or shows a transmission warning, get it checked. Verify with a mechanic.

Recalls, bulletins and complaints in plain words
- No recall covers the DCT bump when stopping.
- Honda service bulletin 17-015: software update and clutch break-in for a bump or hard shift when coming to a stop on 2016–2017 ILX and 2015–2017 TLX 4-cylinder models. A bulletin is a repair guide for mechanics, not a free repair.
- Recall 19V424 (2016–2019 ILX, separate issue): too much grease can keep a driveshaft set-ring from locking fully, so the driveshaft could separate from the half shaft. If your car is part of this recall, the dealer fixes it for free.
- NHTSA complaints: 16 keyword-matched complaints for Acura ILX 2016–2017 (of 72 unique complaints queried, NHTSA complaints API by model year, queried 2026-10-18; keywords: transmission, dct, jerk, lurch, clunk, shift, bump).
What owners report
- In Possible fix for 8spd DCT slamming during stop on AcuraZine, owners said the fix appeared first for the TLX and then bulletin 17-015 added the ILX in September 2017. Several said the update made the car much smoother. One Canadian owner said the dealer resisted at first, and another said a dealer's computer failed during the update and a new module had to be ordered.
- In 2016 Acura ILX Spec transmission problems, a 2016 owner at about 53,000 km described a delay before downshifts, a clunk at low speed and tach bounce. Members said some of it is normal for a DCT, but to get bulletin 17-015 done. After the update the owner said it 'did wonders'.
My take
My advice as a former lot tech: before you assume something is broken on a dual-clutch car, ask for the software history. On an ILX from these years, a lot of 'clunks' went away after bulletin 17-015.
Vehicle focus: 2016–2017 Acura ILX with the 2.4L and 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Safety / mechanic note
A transmission that hesitates or lurches can surprise you in traffic. Verify with a mechanic.
