Symptom: A long crank or stumbling start only right after you fill the tank. Later starts are normal. Sometimes there's a P0496 code, and sometimes no light at all.
Likely causes
- Stuck-open purge valve. TerrainForum members (the Terrain shares the Equinox's engines) explain that a purge valve hanging open lets fuel vapor from refueling flood the intake, so the restart is rich. A 2010 Terrain 2.4 owner confirmed the fix after replacing the valve. A 2017 3.6 owner with P0496 found his replacement valve lasted only about two years. On ChevyEquinoxForum, a 2011 V6 owner found the valve behind and under the throttle body near the firewall, held by one 10mm bolt.
- Topping off. Forum members advise stopping at the first click. They say overfilling causes EVAP problems over time.
DIY or shop?
DIY. The purge valve sits on top of the engine.
Useful steps
- Note whether hard starts happen only after fueling.
- Read codes. P0496 means fuel vapor is flowing when it shouldn't.
- Replace the purge valve with a quality part.
- Stop filling at the first click.

Safety / mechanic note
An EVAP fault usually isn't a safety problem, but a strong raw-fuel smell is. Get that checked right away. Verify with a mechanic before replacing parts.
