Symptom: Oil level dropping between changes, sometimes with a low-oil warning, often showing up around 75,000 miles.

Likely causes

  1. Piston rings. A 2012 Malibu 2.4 owner reports oil use starting around 75,000 miles. GM's bulletin for the same engine family in other models blames worn top rings and replaces the pistons and rings when an oil test shows more than 1 quart per 2,000 miles.
  2. PCV and oil changes. GM's bulletin also says to service the PCV system. Owners say shorter oil change intervals slowed the oil use.

DIY or shop?

Check the PCV yourself (DIY). Ring replacement is a shop job.

Useful steps

  1. Check the dipstick every fill-up.
  2. Have a dealer run an oil consumption test.
  3. Change oil about every 5,000 miles.

Safety / mechanic note

Running low on oil can destroy the engine. Verify with a mechanic or dealer.
