Symptom: Coolant spray or drips on the driver's side of the engine, a sweet smell, a falling coolant level, or overheating.
Likely causes
- Plastic water outlet. Sonic owners on Reddit say the plastic outlet cracking is one of the most common 1.4T problems, often replaced more than once. Many switch to an aluminum outlet.
- Hoses and reservoir. Owners also suggest replacing the bleed hose and checking the reservoir for cracks while doing the job.
DIY or shop?
DIY for most owners (three bolts). ZZP says to torque the bolts to 71 inch-pounds, not foot-pounds.
Useful steps
- Find the leak source.
- Replace the outlet with a quality kit.
- Refill with Dex-Cool and bleed the system.
