P0088: Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too High
Severity: high
What it means: The fuel pressure in the rail (the pipe that feeds the injectors) is higher than the engine computer asked for. On diesels and direct-injection engines it often points to the high-pressure pump's metering valve, the pressure regulator or the rail pressure sensor.
Safe to drive? Not recommended. The engine may go into limp mode (reduced power) or stall, and on some diesels the code can come with a failing high-pressure pump.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light
- Limp mode or reduced power
- Rough running, stalling or hard starting

Vehicle-specific notes
- 2009–2012 Volkswagen Jetta / Jetta SportWagen / Golf TDI: VW bulletin 2041063 tells dealers to check the high-pressure fuel pump for metal particles when these TDIs show P0087, P0088 or P0191, the codes owners report when the pump fails. Read the full answer · Source

DIY or shop?
Reading codes and checking wiring is DIY. Fuel pressure testing and high-pressure fuel system work are shop jobs. Diesel high-pressure fuel can injure you.
Before you replace parts
- Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data, not just this one.
- Check your VIN for recalls, service bulletins and extended coverage.
- Inspect wiring and connectors for the related sensor or part before buying parts.
- Clear the code only after a repair, then confirm it stays off.
Safety / mechanic note
Verify with a mechanic. High-pressure fuel lines can hold very high pressure even after shutdown; do not open them yourself. A code points to a circuit or system, not always a specific part.
