P0732: Gear 2 Incorrect Ratio

Severity: high

What it means: The transmission computer compared the engine-side speed to the output speed while in second gear and the ratio didn't match what second gear should give. That can mean a clutch slipping inside the transmission, low or worn fluid, a sensor problem, or in some vehicles a software issue that a dealer update fixes.

Safe to drive? Drive gently and only to a shop. The transmission may slip, shift hard or go into limp mode (stuck in one gear with low power).

DIY or shop?

Reading the code is DIY. Many modern automatics have no dipstick, so fluid checks, software updates and internal diagnosis are shop or dealer jobs.

Before you replace parts

  1. Read all stored codes, including other gear ratio codes.
  2. Check your VIN for transmission software bulletins, recalls and extended coverage before paying for repairs.
  3. Have the fluid level and condition checked the way the manufacturer specifies.
  4. Clear the code only after a repair, then confirm it stays off.

Safety / mechanic note

Verify with a mechanic. A transmission that slips or drops into limp mode can leave you without power in traffic. A code points to a circuit or system, not always a specific part.
