DIY or shop?

Cycling the 4WD selector through its positions (stopped, in neutral where required) is a DIY first step. Switch testing and replacement are shop jobs for most people.

Before you replace parts

  1. Read all stored codes and note which 4WD position you were in.
  2. Cycle the selector slowly through every position several times on a loose surface.
  3. Inspect the transfer case switch connector and wiring.
  4. Clear the code only after a repair, then confirm it stays off.

Safety / mechanic note

Verify with a mechanic. Driving with the center locked on dry pavement can damage the drivetrain. A code points to a circuit or system, not always a specific part.
