Short answer: The 2014 500L automatic isn't a regular automatic. It's a DDCT (dual dry clutch transmission), basically a manual gearbox that a computer shifts. In slow stop-and-go traffic, especially on hills or in heat, its clutches can slip and overheat, causing a burning smell, smoke, rough shifts and sometimes a car that won't move. Dealers told owners to shift into Neutral when stopped. If it keeps happening, the clutch can burn out, so get it checked and make sure both recalls are done.

Symptom: A burning smell or white smoke from under the hood in slow traffic, jerky, late or harsh shifts, a flashing warning, or no forward movement in Drive.

What to check first

  1. Run your VIN for recalls 14V103 and 17V192 (shifter delay and engine computer calibration). Both are free.
  2. If it smokes, pull over safely, shift to Neutral or Park and let it cool. Don't keep creeping in Drive.
  3. Ask the dealer for a clutch relearn and a check for software updates. That's what dealers did for owners in these threads.
  4. Watch for repeat episodes. One owner's clutch burned out after it happened again, so a second episode means more inspection.

Likely causes

  1. Dry clutch overheating in stop-and-go traffic. Holding the car in Drive at a stop or creeping slowly makes the dry clutch slip and heat up. Hills, heat and long traffic jams make it worse.
  2. Worn or burned clutch assembly. Repeated overheating can burn up the clutch, which then needs replacing.
  3. Software or clutch calibration. Dealers relearn the clutch engagement point. Owners also mention software updates.

What it usually costs

The recalls are free. Owners in these threads didn't post out-of-pocket prices. One Allpar owner's dealer replaced a burned clutch under warranty and added goodwill coverage, so ask about coverage if your car still has any warranty.

Is it safe to keep driving?

Not while it's smoking or won't pull. A car that suddenly won't move in traffic is a real hazard. Once it cools it usually drives again, but get it checked before you rely on it in heavy traffic. Verify with a mechanic.

DIY or shop?

Shop. Clutch relearns need a scan tool, and the clutch itself is a transmission job. DIY only for driving habits: Neutral at long stops and manual shifting in crawling traffic.

Recalls, bulletins and complaints in plain words

  • Recall 14V103 (2014 500L built April 5, 2013, through January 22, 2014): in certain temperatures, moving the shift lever may have a delayed effect or no effect. Dealers replace the shifter module or update its software. If your car is part of this recall, the dealer fixes it for free.
  • Recall 17V192 (certain 2014 500L): the engine computer software may limit the engine to idle speed and power even with the pedal fully pressed. Dealers update the software. If your car is part of this recall, the dealer fixes it for free.

What owners report

  • In 500L Clutch overheated??? on the Fiat 500 USA forum, a 500L Trekking automatic owner with about 19,700 km on it smelled something and saw white smoke after about 15 minutes of stop-and-go on a slight hill. The car wouldn't drive and a warning flashed. The dealer said the clutch overheated, called it normal for this transmission, and said to shift into Neutral at stops. Members agreed it behaves like a robotized manual, while one said his auto-shifted to Neutral at lights.
  • In 2014 500L DDCT Issue on Allpar, an owner's 500L put out smelly smoke in stop-and-go traffic at just under 1,800 miles and started shifting harshly. The dealer did a clutch relearn, and Fiat advised Neutral at stops and manual shifting in slow traffic. It came back at about 3,100 miles, the clutch assembly was burned up, and the dealer ended up putting him in a different vehicle.

My take

My advice as a former finance manager: if you're shopping a 2014 500L automatic and you drive in heavy traffic, think hard about it. If you already own one, put it in Neutral at long lights and keep the dealer paperwork from every episode. That paper trail matters if you ever ask for goodwill.

Vehicle focus: 2014 Fiat 500L with the DDCT dual dry clutch automatic (later 500Ls offered a conventional automatic).

Safety / mechanic note
