AD SLOT 1 (placeholder)

Symptom: Shudder or judder when pulling away gently, a hesitation or jerk between low gears, and sometimes fluid seeping from the clutch housing.

Likely causes

  1. Dual clutch packs. Ford's bulletin describes clutch shudder on light acceleration and calls for a software update first, then clutch replacement if the shudder test is out of limits.
  2. Input shaft seals. Fluid leaking onto the clutches makes shudder worse. Cars built on or after June 6, 2013 got improved seals.
  3. Software adaptation. Updating and relearning the transmission can reduce mild cases.

DIY or shop?

Shop or dealer. Clutch work needs Ford's scan tool to relearn.

Useful steps

  1. Ask a Ford dealer to check your VIN for open programs and updates.
  2. Ask for the bulletin's shudder test, not just a road test.
  3. Keep records of every visit in case the problem returns.

Safety / mechanic note

Hesitation when pulling into traffic can be dangerous. Verify with a mechanic or dealer.
