Short answer: On the G90, a shake above about 55 to 60 mph is most often the tires and wheels: an out-of-round tire, a bent wheel from a pothole, or a balance job that wasn't a true road force balance (a balancer that presses a roller on the tire to find hidden high spots). On AWD cars, one owner traced a rhythmic shake that tires couldn't fix to a faulty stability sensor that made the stability system pulse the brakes. A simple test with the stability control turned off can tell the two apart.

Symptom: A shake or shimmy in the steering wheel or the whole car, usually starting around 55 to 65 mph on smooth roads.

What to check first

  1. Ask for a true road force balance, done by someone trained on the machine. G90 owners said a correct road force balance finally fixed theirs.
  2. Have the wheels checked for bends from potholes, and the tires for being out of round.
  3. On AWD (HTRAC) cars, try this test on a smooth road: hold the ESC button about 5 seconds until 'ESC OFF' shows, then drive at the speed where it shakes. If the shake goes away, the stability system may be getting bad sensor data. Turn ESC back on right after.
  4. Ask the dealer to look at the yaw and G-sensor readings in live data if the test points that way.
  5. Ask about warranty extensions for your VIN.

Likely causes

  1. Tire balance or out-of-round tires. The most common cause owners found.
  2. Bent wheels from potholes. Wheels can often be straightened, then balanced.
  3. Faulty yaw/G-sensor making the stability system pulse the brakes (AWD). One owner's fix after years of tire work.
  4. Warped brake rotors. Owners mentioned rotor updates on some cars.

What it usually costs

Owners who fixed it with tires paid for road force balancing and, in some cases, new tires or wheel straightening. One owner's dealer paid for two new front tires after a balance was done wrong. We don't have a reliable price for the sensor repair.

Is it safe to keep driving?

A mild highway shake isn't usually an emergency, but it wears parts and can hide a real problem like a damaged wheel or tire. Get it checked soon, and slow down if it gets worse. Don't leave stability control off. Verify with a mechanic.

DIY or shop?

Shop. You need a road force balancer and a scan tool that reads the stability system.

Recalls, bulletins and complaints in plain words

  • Genesis warranty extension Z01G (some 2017 G90 and G80): extends coverage for the airbag control unit to 15 years with unlimited miles for certain build dates, after various fault codes. One owner linked to it in the shaking thread. It covers the airbag control unit, so ask the dealer whether it applies to your car and your symptoms.
  • NHTSA complaints: 6 keyword-matched complaints for Genesis G90 2017–2020 (of 51 unique complaints queried, NHTSA complaints API by model year, queried 2026-10-21; keywords: shake, vibrate, shimmy, wobble, stability, ESC, yaw). This counts complaints that mention these words. It is not a defect finding.

What owners report

  • In 17-19 G90 highway shaking SOLVED! FINALLY! on Genesis Forums, an AWD G90 owner who had chased a highway shake for years found the yaw-rate reading jumping around in live data. With ESC turned off, the shake went away. Replacing the sensor module under the front console fixed it. Other owners said new tires also changed the shake a lot.
  • In Shimmying/Shaking Over 60 MPH on Genesis Forums, a 2018 G90 5.0 AWD owner had a shake above 60 mph. Owners said dealers blamed alignment, but a properly done road force balance fixed it for one member, another had bent wheels straightened and balanced, and members said not every 'road force balance' is done fully.

My take

Before paying for more tires, ask the shop to show you the road force numbers for each wheel. If they're good and it still shakes, look further.

Vehicle focus: 2017–2020 Genesis G90, especially AWD (HTRAC).

Safety / mechanic note

A shake can be a sign of a damaged wheel or tire. Verify with a mechanic.
