Short answer: If your GV70 is completely dead in the morning, the 12V battery is flat. On gas GV70s, owners found weak batteries and, in one case, a loose wire draining it, and dealers sometimes miss it because the car 'starts strong' after a jump. On the Electrified GV70, the 12V is charged from the big battery, and the ICCU recall 24V868 fixes a part that can stop charging it. Owners also measured a big drain when the car was left unlocked in the garage.

Symptom: No response to the fob or door handle, a dark dash, a car that needs a jump after sitting a few hours or overnight, or a 12V charging light on the dash of the Electrified model.

What to check first

  1. Record a video when it's dead before you jump it. One owner's second dealer only took it seriously after seeing it.
  2. Ask the dealer to leave it overnight and test again, plus do a parasitic draw test (measuring how much power the car uses when off).
  3. On the Electrified GV70, run your VIN at genesis.com or nhtsa.gov/recalls for 24V868 (ICCU).
  4. Lock the car, even in your garage. An Electrified GV70 owner measured a drain of over 9 amps for a long time when it was left unlocked, versus about 25–30 milliamps when locked.
  5. If you use phone-as-key passive entry, try turning it off.

Likely causes

  1. Weak 12V battery. One owner's dealer replaced a battery that had passed its first test.
  2. Wiring fault draining the battery. The same owner's dealer later found a loose wire ('faulty neutral') causing a drain, and it still went dead again afterward.
  3. Car staying awake when left unlocked (Electrified). An owner with a clamp-on meter found the car drew 9+ amps for a long time when left unlocked, and phone-key wake-ups caused more drain.
  4. ICCU failure (Electrified). Recall 24V868 says the integrated charging control unit can be damaged and stop charging the 12V battery.

What it usually costs

Repairs in these threads were under the new-car warranty, and the ICCU recall is free. A replacement 12V battery out of warranty is an ordinary battery job; get a draw test before buying parts.

Is it safe to keep driving?

A car that may not start, or on the Electrified model may lose drive power if the ICCU fails, isn't one to rely on. Keep a jump pack and get it diagnosed. Verify with a mechanic.

DIY or shop?

Locking it, a jump pack and a battery monitor are DIY. Draw testing and ICCU work are dealer jobs.

Recalls, bulletins and complaints in plain words

  • Recall 24V868 (Electrified GV70 and other Hyundai/Genesis EVs): the integrated charging control unit (ICCU, the part that charges the 12V battery from the big battery) can be damaged and stop charging the 12V battery, which can lead to a loss of drive power. Dealers inspect and replace the ICCU and its fuse as needed and update its software. It replaces the earlier recall 24V204. If your car is part of this recall, the dealer fixes it for free.
  • NHTSA complaints: 12 keyword-matched complaints for Genesis GV70 and Electrified GV70 2022–2024 (of 181 unique complaints queried, NHTSA complaints API by model year, queried 2026-10-18; keywords: battery, 12v, 12 v, 12-volt, dead, wont start, no start, iccu) (NHTSA returned no complaint data for 1 model-year queries).

What owners report

  • In Brand new GV70 - car keeps being unresponsive (like battery is dead) and won't start on Genesis Forums, a two-month-old GV70 went dead after about four hours parked, again and again. The first dealer said the battery passed. A second dealer was shown the owner's video, replaced the battery, then found a loose wire draining it, and the car still went dead again.
  • In 12 Volt Battery, an Electrified GV70 owner measured a 9+ amp drain when the car was left unlocked in the garage, and another owner traced repeated 12V charging and a dead battery to phone-as-key passive entry waking the car.

My take

My advice as a former lot tech: on new cars sitting on a lot, the 12V battery is the first thing to go. If your GV70 keeps dying and the dealer says the battery 'tests fine,' ask them to leave it overnight and check it cold before you take it home.

Vehicle focus: 2022–2024 Genesis GV70 (gas) and Electrified GV70.

Safety / mechanic note

A dead 12V battery can leave you stranded, and an ICCU failure can cut drive power. Verify with a mechanic.
