Short answer: On the Lucid Air, a 'Drive system fault' or 'Driving power reduced' message with a turtle icon means the car has found a problem with a drive unit (the motor and inverter that turn the wheels) or the high-voltage system and is limiting or cutting power. Owners on forums have had rear drive units and front motors replaced under warranty. Lucid has also issued several recalls for loss of drive power, so check your VIN and keep software up to date.

Symptom: A 'Drive system fault' or 'Driving power reduced' message, a turtle icon, a speed limit (one owner saw about 52 mph), or in the worst cases the car coasting to a stop.

What to check first

  1. Get off the road safely as soon as you see the warning. Owners describe the car stopping with no room to pull over.
  2. Run your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or in the Lucid app for 23V110, 23V523, 24V497, 24V836 and 26V309.
  3. Make sure the car has the latest software. Several of these recalls were fixed over the air.
  4. Write down when it happens (speed, battery level, cruise control on or off) and take a photo of the message for the service center.
  5. Ask about a loaner if parts are on order.

Likely causes

  1. Failed drive unit or inverter. A 2022 Air GT owner on Lucid Owners had the rear drive unit replaced; another had a front motor replaced. Lucid's recall 26V309 says friction damage inside Gen 4 inverters on Air Pure RWD cars can cause sudden loss of drive power.
  2. High-voltage contactor or software fault. Recalls 23V110 and 24V497 cover contactors (heavy-duty switches that connect the main battery) opening unexpectedly or being opened by software, cutting power to the motors.
  3. Wiring harness strain (2024–2025 Air Pure RWD). Recall 24V836 says a rear subframe harness may be too short and lose power to the rear drive unit.

What it usually costs

Recall work and warranty repairs are free. The owners in these threads had drive unit and motor replacements done under warranty.

Is it safe to keep driving?

No. If the message comes on, slow down and pull over safely. Several owners had the car stop completely, and Air Pure RWD cars have only one drive unit, so there's no backup. Have it towed to Lucid. Verify with a mechanic.

DIY or shop?

Service center only. These are high-voltage parts. Your job is checking recalls, installing software updates, and reporting the fault.

Recalls, bulletins and complaints in plain words

  • Recall 23V110 (2022–2023 Air): the contactor switches that send power to the drive motors may open unexpectedly. Lucid updates software and replaces contactors as needed.
  • Recall 23V523 (2022–2023 Air): older software (2.0.64 and earlier) may not handle an inverter power module failure properly, causing loss of drive power without warning. Fixed over the air.
  • Recall 24V497 (2022–2023 Air): the high-voltage interlock software could open the contactors while driving. Fixed over the air.
  • Recall 24V836 (2024–2025 Air Pure RWD): a rear wiring harness may be too short and cut power to the rear drive unit. Lucid replaces the harness.
  • Recall 26V309 (2024–2025 Air Pure RWD with Gen 4 inverters): friction damage inside the inverter can cause loss of drive power. Lucid's software monitors for failure and Lucid replaces the inverter if it detects one. If your car is part of any of these recalls, Lucid fixes it for free.
  • NHTSA complaints: 18 keyword-matched complaints for Lucid Air 2022–2024 (of 63 unique complaints queried, NHTSA complaints API by model year, queried 2026-10-18; keywords: loss of drive, loss of power, lost power, drive system, power reduced, drive power, reduced power, 12v, 12 v, 12-volt, shut down, turtle, stall, inverter, lost propulsion, loss of propulsion, loss of motive).

What owners report

  • In Driving power reduced / Drive system fault on Lucid Owners, a 2022 Air GT owner got a turtle icon that came back after a reboot. The service center replaced the rear drive unit. Another owner said a low-power warning that limited them to about 52 mph ended with a front motor replacement under warranty.
  • In Drive System Fault on r/LUCID, an owner about 400 miles in had the car come to a complete stop from 45 mph and couldn't even shift to Neutral.
  • In Drive fault error while driving on highway, an owner had a drive fault at 65 mph for the second time in two months.
  • In 12v System Fault 2024 Air Pure, an owner's car was picked up by truck, and another commenter said a drive system fault left their car dead in an intersection.

My take

My advice as a former finance manager: on a used Air, ask for the service history printout and the software version before you sign. Make sure every drive-power recall shows as completed, and know exactly how much factory warranty is left on the drive units.

Vehicle focus: 2022–2024 Lucid Air (Pure, Touring, Grand Touring, Sapphire); recalls 24V836 and 26V309 cover 2024–2025 Air Pure RWD.

Safety / mechanic note

A sudden loss of drive power can leave you stopped in traffic. Verify with a mechanic.
