Short answer: On the W204 C-Class, water on the floor usually comes from a clogged drain, not a bad seal. Owners on MBWorld found three main culprits: the sunroof drains in the front corners of the sunroof opening, the drain at the base of the windshield (the cowl), and the A/C evaporator drain, which can dump water into the rear driver-side footwell when it clogs. Testing each one with a cup of water usually finds it.

Symptom: Wet carpet or standing water in a footwell, water dripping where the headliner meets the A-pillar, water only after using the A/C, or a musty smell.

What to check first

  1. Test the sunroof drains: open the sunroof, pour water into the front corners by the wind deflector, and look for it to come out behind the front wheels.
  2. Check the drains at the base of the windshield under the cowl. One owner found the center one badly clogged.
  3. Run the A/C and look under the car for water dripping from the evaporator drain. If the floor only gets wet with the A/C on, that drain is likely clogged.
  4. Dry the carpet and padding fully. Wet padding holds water and can damage wiring and modules under the floor.

Likely causes

  1. Clogged sunroof drain. The drain tubes run down the pillars. When they clog, water overflows and runs down the A-pillar into the car.
  2. Clogged A/C evaporator drain. The A/C makes a lot of water. If its drain clogs, the water backs up into the car, often in the rear driver-side footwell.
  3. Clogged windshield cowl drain. Leaves and debris block the drains below the windshield.

What it usually costs

The owners in these threads cleared the drains themselves with a flexible wire, compressed air and a piece of air hose, so it cost them little. A shop charge depends on how much of the interior needs drying.

Is it safe to keep driving?

Yes, but don't let it sit wet. Standing water can damage electrical connectors and modules under the carpet and grow mold. Fix the drain and dry the interior soon. Verify with a mechanic.

DIY or shop?

DIY-friendly. Owners cleared drains with flexible wire and compressed air. Go gently so you don't pop a drain tube loose inside the pillar.

Recalls, bulletins and complaints in plain words

What owners report

  • In Water leak ?? How to test and unclog sunroof drains W/PICS on MBWorld, a 2009 C300 owner at 36,000 miles had water coming in where the headliner meets the passenger A-pillar and pooling under the driver's carpet. He poured water by the deflector, saw almost none come out behind the wheels, ran a flexible wire down each front drain gently, and blew them out with a sharpened 1/4-inch air hose. Another member said spiders building nests in the drains is a common cause.
  • In Water in Backseat Footwell on Driver's Side, someone working on a 2012 C300 found the center windshield drain badly clogged and the sunroof drains clear, but water came back after a drive. With the A/C off there was no water, and with it on the leak returned, confirming a clogged A/C drain reachable under the dash by the center console. A 2014 C350 owner then reported the same wet rear footwell.

My take

My advice as a former detailer: whenever I pulled up a wet carpet, the cause was almost always a clogged drain, not a bad seal. Pour a cup of water into each drain once a year, especially if you park under trees. It's free and saves you a soggy interior.

Vehicle focus: 2008–2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W204) sedans and coupes.

Safety / mechanic note

Standing water can damage wiring and modules under the carpet. Verify with a mechanic.
