Short answer: On an R56 MINI Cooper, revs that jump without the car speeding up, a clutch that only grabs at the very top of the pedal, or a burning smell usually means a worn clutch. There's no wear gauge, so owners do a simple stall test. Quotes on the forums range from about $1,400 to $3,900, and the big swing is labor and whether the flywheel (the heavy disc the clutch presses against) is replaced too.

Symptom: Engine revs rise in higher gears but speed doesn't, the pedal catches at the very top, a burnt smell after hills or traffic, or oil dripping near the transmission.

What to check first

  1. Do the stall test. With the engine idling and the parking brake on, put it in a high gear and let the clutch out slowly. A healthy clutch stalls the engine. If it keeps running, the clutch is slipping.
  2. Look for oil under the engine-transmission joint. A leaking rear main seal can soak the clutch and make it slip.
  3. Check the brake fluid level. The clutch hydraulics share the brake fluid reservoir. A leak or air in the line changes how the pedal feels.
  4. Ask whether the quote includes the flywheel. The base Cooper uses a simpler single-piece flywheel that often doesn't need replacing. The Cooper S uses a dual-mass flywheel that costs more.

Likely causes

  1. Worn clutch disc. Normal wear, faster with city driving and resting a foot on the pedal.
  2. Oil on the clutch from a leaking seal. Fix the leak at the same time or the new clutch will slip too.
  3. Clutch hydraulic problem (master or slave cylinder, air in line). Can make the pedal feel wrong without a worn clutch.
  4. Worn flywheel. More common on the Cooper S dual-mass flywheel.

What it usually costs

On North American Motoring, a 2011 base Cooper owner was quoted about $3,700 by the dealer and $3,900 by one independent shop, while members said most independents charge around $3,000. In an earlier thread, a 2008 owner got a $3,500 dealer quote, members said about $2,000 at an independent MINI shop, and one owner was quoted $1,400 for the clutch plus about $500 if the flywheel was needed. A shop said it books about 10 hours of labor.

Is it safe to keep driving?

A slipping clutch is drivable for a while but gets worse quickly, and it can leave you unable to climb a hill or merge. Don't put off the repair. Verify with a mechanic.

DIY or shop?

Shop for most people. Owners have done it at home on jack stands in about two days, but the subframe has to come down and the steering must be locked so the steering angle sensor stays in sync.

Recalls, bulletins and complaints in plain words

  • No recall: clutches are a wear item.
  • NHTSA complaints: 34 keyword-matched complaints for MINI Cooper/Clubman 2007–2013 (of 1,241 unique complaints queried, NHTSA complaints API by model year, queried 2026-10-21; keywords: clutch, slip, burning smell, pressure plate, flywheel, throw-out) (NHTSA returned no complaint data for 17 model-year queries). What owners report

  • In R56 Clutch - diagnosing and cost? on North American Motoring, a 2011 base Cooper with 117,000 miles grabbed only at the top of the pedal, then began slipping. Members explained the stall test, said there's no wear indicator and the self-adjusting hydraulics hide wear, and noted the base Cooper's flywheel often doesn't need replacing. Owners who did the job at home said the subframe has to come down.
  • In R56 Clutch replacement $$ - St. Louis on North American Motoring, a 2008 owner with a slipping clutch got a $3,500 dealer quote. Members and shops said about $2,000 at an independent, or about $1,400 without a flywheel. Another owner found an oil leak at the rear main seal soaking the clutch and replaced the seal with it.

My take

When you test-drive a used stick-shift MINI, do the stall test and ask for clutch receipts. A $3,000 clutch bill should come off the price.

Vehicle focus: 2007–2013 MINI Cooper and Cooper S (R56) with a manual transmission.

Safety / mechanic note

A slipping clutch can leave you without power when merging or on a hill. Verify with a mechanic.
