Symptom: A check-engine light with P0456 (very small EVAP leak). Drivability is usually normal.
Likely causes
- Vent control valve O-ring. Nissan bulletin NTB17-082E says that when smoke testing finds the leak where the vent control valve mounts to the canister, replace the vent control valve assembly. The O-ring is no longer serviced by itself.
- Fuel cap. The bulletin tells techs to rule out a loose cap first (see also NTB13-097).
- Canister and other leaks. NICOclub and Nissan Club threads still find cracked canisters or other vapor leaks after the valve is addressed — confirm with smoke.
DIY or shop?
Cap checks and a vent-valve swap are often DIY. Smoke testing is a shop job.
Useful steps
- Confirm P0456 and check the fuel cap.
- Ask the shop to smoke-test at the vent valve-to-canister joint.
- Replace the vent control valve assembly if that O-ring is the leak.
- Clear the code and verify it stays off after several drive cycles.

Safety / mechanic note
An EVAP fault usually isn't a safety problem, but a strong raw-fuel smell is. Get that checked right away. Verify with a mechanic before replacing parts.
