Symptom: Erratic or harsh shifting, slipping, shudder, pink milky transmission fluid, or oil in the coolant.
Likely causes
- Radiator cooler leak. Club Frontier, Club Xterra and TheNewX owners describe the radiator's built-in transmission cooler failing and mixing coolant into the transmission fluid. Many transmissions are ruined.
- Prevention. Owners replace the original radiator early or bypass it with an external transmission cooler.
DIY or shop?
Radiator swap is DIY. A contaminated transmission is a shop job.
Useful steps
- Check both the coolant and transmission fluid.
- Replace an original radiator before it fails.
- If fluid is contaminated, act fast.
