Symptom: Often no warning. Some owners find metal flakes in the oil filter, a rattle from the back of the engine, or an oil leak at the IMS cover before the engine fails.
Likely causes
- IMS bearing. Rennlist owners document IMS failures on naturally aspirated M96/M97 engines. LN Engineering says the single-row bearings in many 2000–2005 cars fail more often than the early dual-row ones.
- Prevention. Many owners retrofit an upgraded bearing during a clutch job.
