Short answer: On early Macans, a shudder, jerk or binding feeling at low speeds, in parking lots, or while turning is very often the transfer case (the part that splits power between the front and rear wheels). Porsche extended coverage on it to 7 years, but most early cars are past that now. Some owners got the shudder to go away with a transfer case fluid change; others needed a replacement, with dealer bills around $4,200–$5,200 and quotes as high as $8,000.
Symptom: A shudder or vibration when pulling away or at low speed, jerky low-gear shifts, a binding or hopping feeling in tight turns, sometimes with a drivetrain warning.
What to check first
- Ask a Porsche dealer whether your VIN is covered by the transfer case extended warranty. Owners say it ran 7 years.
- Have the transfer case wear value read. One owner's scan tool showed a wear reading of 125 against a recommended replacement point of 145.
- Ask when the transfer case fluid was last changed. Owners say early fluid changes help.
- Get two quotes if it needs replacing: a dealer and an independent Porsche shop.
Likely causes
- Worn transfer case clutch / old fluid. A 2016 Macan S owner at 80,000 miles found the fluid black and burnt-smelling; changing it made the car run smooth again.
- Failed transfer case. A 2016 Macan S owner at 59,000 miles needed a replacement after the extended coverage ran out; a 2016 Turbo owner had theirs replaced at 29,000 miles.
What it usually costs
A 2016 Macan S owner was quoted $5,200 plus tax at the dealer and paid $4,200 with tax after negotiation, with a 2-year unlimited-mile warranty on the new unit. He said the part alone lists for about $3,200, an independent shop quoted around $6,200, and Porsche turned down his goodwill request. Another owner was quoted $8,000. A fluid change costs far less and helped at least one owner.
Is it safe to keep driving?
Usually drivable in the short term, but a binding transfer case can get worse and stress other parts. Don't ignore a drivetrain warning. Verify with a mechanic.
DIY or shop?
A fluid change is an experienced DIY job (owners bought OEM fluid, new plugs and a syringe). Replacement is a shop job. A few owners have rebuilt their own units.
Recalls, bulletins and complaints in plain words
- No recall covers the transfer case. Owners say Porsche extended its coverage to 7 years.
- Recall 18V318 (a few 2018 Macan and Macan S, separate issue): a control unit could fail and disable safety warnings. Dealers replace it. If your car is part of this recall, the dealer fixes it for free.
- NHTSA complaints: 12 keyword-matched complaints for Porsche Macan 2015–2018 (of 175 unique complaints queried, NHTSA complaints API by model year, queried 2026-10-18; keywords: transfer case, shudder, jerk, vibrat, clunk, drivetrain, 4wd, awd, all wheel) (NHTSA returned no complaint data for 3 model-year queries).
What owners report
- In Macan S transfer case: joining the club of expected breakdowns! on Porsche Macan Forum, a 2016 Macan S owner at 59,000 miles, just past the extended warranty, compared dealer and independent quotes and ended up paying $4,200 at the dealer. Another owner at 80,000 miles fixed the shudder with a fluid change, and a 2017 owner who asked for a fluid change got a new transfer case under the extended coverage.

My take
My advice as a former pre-purchase inspector: on a 2015–2018 Macan, I drive it slowly through a tight parking lot turn, both directions. Any hop or shudder means the transfer case is on the list, and I ask for the fluid service record.
Vehicle focus: 2015–2018 Porsche Macan, Macan S, GTS and Turbo.
Safety / mechanic note
A binding transfer case can affect drivability. Verify with a mechanic.
