Short answer: On the ProMaster, a shifter that won't move, is stuck in manual mode, or shows a different gear than the van is actually in usually points to the shift cable (the cable connecting the shifter to the transmission). The cable can bind, or come loose and separate. Ram's recall replaces the cable for free on affected vans, so check that first.

Symptom: The shifter is hard to move or stuck, the van is stuck in manual mode, or the dash shows one gear while the van is in another (it may even roll in Park).

What to check first

  1. Check your VIN for recall 20V036 (Ram W00) for the shift cable, and 23V301 (Ram 44A) for park on 2019 vans.
  2. Use the parking brake every time until this is fixed.
  3. If the shifter and gear don't match, don't drive it. Have it towed or repaired.
  4. Look at where the cable attaches to the transmission for a loose or broken end.

Likely causes

  1. Shift cable separating or binding. Recall 20V036: the shifter cable may come off the transmission, so the lever position may not match the gear. One ProMaster Forum owner's cable was binding in its outer sheath.
  2. Park pawl not engaging (2019). Recall 23V301: debris may stop the park pawl (the pin that locks the transmission in Park) from engaging.

What it usually costs

Free under the recall if your van is covered. One ProMaster Forum owner fixed his out-of-recall van with a used shifter assembly for about $50, taking about an hour.

Is it safe to keep driving?

No, if the gear doesn't match the shifter. The van could roll away when you think it's in Park. Verify with a mechanic.

DIY or shop?

Dealer if it's under recall. DIY for experienced owners replacing the cable or shifter assembly.

Recalls, bulletins and complaints in plain words

  • Recall 20V036 (Ram W00): the shifter cable may come loose from the transmission, so the gear selected may not match the gear shown, and the van can roll away. Dealers replace the cable. If your van is part of this recall, the dealer fixes it for free.
  • Recall 23V301 (Ram 44A; 2019 and later ProMaster with the 62TE transmission): debris can keep the park pawl from engaging. Dealers update the engine computer software and inspect or replace parts. Free if your van is included.

What owners report

My take

My advice as a former lot tech: on any ProMaster that comes through, put it in Park on a slight slope with the parking brake off and see if it holds. Then run the VIN for both recalls.

Vehicle focus: 2014–2019 Ram ProMaster with the 3.6L V6 and 62TE automatic.

Safety / mechanic note

A van that is not truly in Park can roll away. Verify with a mechanic.
