Short answer: On the 2007–2008 Aura with the 4-speed automatic, a shifter that feels sloppy, a gear display that doesn't match the lever, or a key that won't come out usually means the transmission shift cable is fraying or has broken. GM recalled these cars (NHTSA 14V224, GM 14152) and replaces the cable and its bracket. If the cable breaks, the transmission may not actually be in Park even when the lever says it is, so the car can roll away. If your car is part of this recall, the dealer fixes it for free.

Symptom: It gets hard to pick a gear, the PRNDL display doesn't match the lever, the key won't come out of the ignition, or the lever moves to Park but the car still rolls.

What to check first

  1. Run your VIN for recalls 14V224 and 12V460 at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Both involve the shift cable on these cars.
  2. Always set the parking brake until it's fixed. GM's warning is that the car may roll away if you get out with it not truly in Park.
  3. Watch the gear display. If it doesn't match the lever, stop driving it and get the cable checked.
  4. If the key won't come out, don't force it. That's an early sign the cable is fracturing.

Likely causes

  1. Fraying or broken shift cable (recall 14V224). GM says the cable can fracture. As it starts, gears get hard to select and the key may not come out. Dealers replace the cable and bracket.
  2. Cracked tabs on the cable end (recall 12V460). An earlier recall on 2007–2010 Auras covered cable-end tabs that can break. Dealers add a retainer or replace the cable.
  3. Cable popped off the shifter ball (2009 and later). On a 2009 Aura outside the recall, a Saturn Forum member said repair kits exist if the cable has only come off the ball.

What it usually costs

The recall repair is free. GM's special coverage bulletin 11175A also covered the cable on 2007–2008 Auras for 10 years or 120,000 miles. The owners in these threads didn't post shop prices for a non-recall cable.

Is it safe to keep driving?

Not with a broken or fraying cable. The car may not be in Park when the lever says it is, and it can roll away. Set the parking brake every time and get it fixed. Verify with a mechanic or dealer.

DIY or shop?

Dealer for recall cars. On later cars outside the recall, a handy owner can replace the cable or clip, but the bracket and adjustment matter. A shop is the safer choice.

Recalls, bulletins and complaints in plain words

  • Recall 14V224 (GM 14152; 2007–2008 Aura, later expanded to 2004–2008 Malibu and 2005–2008 G6): the shift cable can fracture, so the driver may not be able to select gears or put the car in Park, and it may roll away. Dealers replace the cable and bracket. If your car is part of this recall, the dealer fixes it for free.
  • Recall 12V460 (GM 12106; 2007–2010 Aura, 2008–2010 Malibu and G6 with the 4-speed): the tabs on the cable end may break. Dealers install a retainer or replace the cable, free.
  • NHTSA complaints: 184 keyword-matched complaints for Saturn Aura 2007–2009 (of 1,430 unique complaints queried, NHTSA complaints API by model year, queried 2026-10-20; keywords: shift cable, shifter, shift lever, into park, out of park, won.?t shift, stuck in, transmission cable, gear selector).

What owners report

  • In Shifter Cable Part# 84523156 replacement on Saturn Forum, a 2009 Aura XR owner's shift cable broke and the GM part number was discontinued. A member suggested a Malibu cable might work if the length and routing match, and said repair kits exist if the cable has just popped off the ball.
  • In Rolling into the shop today for a recall.... on r/Justrolledintotheshop, a poster showed a frayed and separated shift cable on a car that kept rolling after the lever was moved to Park. The VIN was confirmed for recall 14V224.

My take

My advice as a former lot tech: on any Aura, Malibu or G6 of this era, I shift through every gear at the curb and watch the display. If the key sticks or the display lags, it goes to the dealer before anyone test drives it.

Vehicle focus: 2007–2008 Saturn Aura with the 4-speed automatic (related recalls cover 2004–2008 Malibu and 2005–2008 G6).

Safety / mechanic note

A broken shift cable can leave the car out of Park and let it roll away. Verify with a mechanic.
