Symptom: Wet front or rear carpets after rain or a car wash, sometimes only on one side, often with a musty smell. The sunroof itself may look fine.

Likely causes

  1. Clogged drains. XV Forum and Reddit Crosstrek owners repeatedly trace floor water to clogged front sunroof drains packed with pine needles, dirt or algae. Water backs up and spills into the A-pillar/cabin instead of exiting near the wheel wells.
  2. Cleaning. Owners open the sunroof, clear the corner drain holes, then gently run flexible trimmer line or a drain snake down each tube and water-test until flow exits outside.
  3. Seal / frame. If drains flow freely and carpets still get wet, shops inspect the sunroof glass seal and frame. A few owners needed glass/seal work after drains were ruled out.

DIY or shop?

Clearing drains is DIY. Seal and frame repairs are a shop job.

Useful steps

  1. Pull the wet carpet and dry the foam so you do not grow mold.
  2. Clear and water-test all four sunroof drains.
  3. Check the cabin filter area for water.
  4. If leaks continue, have the sunroof seal and frame inspected.

Safety / mechanic note

Standing water under carpets can soak wiring and airbags sensors over time. Verify with a mechanic if you also see electrical warnings or if drains will not flow.
