Symptom: The pump clicks off after about 9 or 10 gallons even with the low-fuel light on. The tank is rated at about 14.5 gallons, so your real range is much shorter than expected. This affects the hybrid RAV4, not the gas-only model.
Likely causes
- Tank fill behavior. The long RAV4World thread collected many owner reports. Toyota responded with a customer support program that replaces the fuel tank and fuel sender gauge when a dealer confirms the problem.
- Gauge reading. The sender is replaced along with the tank, so the gauge should read correctly afterward.
- The pump nozzle. Some nozzles click off early. Filling more slowly helps a little but won't fix a tank that doesn't fill.
Cost
No charge under Toyota's program once a dealer verifies the problem. Program terms have time and mileage limits, so check your VIN with a Toyota dealer.
DIY or shop?
Dealer. There's nothing to fix yourself, but keep a record of your fill-ups.
Useful steps
- Keep receipts showing how many gallons went in when the low-fuel light was on.
- Ask a Toyota dealer to check your VIN for the RAV4 Hybrid fuel tank program.
- Follow the dealer's fill-test instructions (fill until the nozzle stops).

Safety / mechanic note
This isn't a direct safety defect, but running out of fuel sooner than you expect can leave you stranded. Plan fill-ups by miles driven until it's fixed.
