Symptom: While driving or slowing down, the truck suddenly drops into first gear. It feels like being rear-ended, and the rear tires can chirp, slide, or briefly lock.
Likely causes
- Output shaft speed sensor signal. Ford found that a faulty sensor signal could make the transmission command first gear. The fix is a PCM software update.
- Lead frame. On trucks with related trouble codes, the recall also replaces the transmission lead frame (the internal wiring board that carries the sensor).
F150Forum owners describe the jolt in exactly these terms. Many trucks were fixed under the earlier recall, and Ford later expanded it.
Cost
$0 under the recalls.
