Symptom: You've been cruising on the highway in rain, fog, or high humidity. When you floor it to pass or merge, the truck stumbles, bucks, or loses power. The check-engine light may flash. Misfire codes for cylinders 4, 5, or 6, or P0430, are common.

Likely causes (ranked by how often they show up in owner threads)

  1. Water in the intercooler. Moisture condenses inside the charge air cooler while you cruise. Under full boost, the engine pulls it in all at once. Ford's own bulletins describe this pattern.
  2. Old software. Ford's fix changed over time, from air deflectors to a new PCM calibration. EcoBoost forum owners describe the 2014 calibration as the fix that let them remove the earlier deflector plates.
  3. Ignition wear. Worn plugs or weak coils make a marginal situation worse, and EcoBoost engines are hard on plugs.
  4. Catalytic converter damage from repeated misfires (P0430, left side).

Rough cost range

We didn't find consistent out-of-pocket prices in the threads we checked. Bulletin work was done under warranty at the time. Plugs and coils are the cheapest place to start.

DIY or shop?

  • DIY: spark plugs and coils, if you're comfortable working on the engine.
  • Shop: PCM update and any intercooler or catalytic converter replacement.

Useful steps

  1. Write down the conditions: humid weather, after highway cruising, hard throttle.
  2. Ask a Ford dealer whether TSB 13-8-1 (2011–2012) or 14-0017 (2013–2014) and the latest PCM calibration were applied.
  3. Check plug condition and gap if mileage is high.
  4. Aftermarket intercoolers and catch cans are add-ons. They don't replace the factory fix.

Safety / mechanic note

A sudden loss of power while passing or merging is dangerous. Verify with a mechanic if the stumble is severe or the check-engine light flashes. A flashing light means a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter.
