Symptom: A rattle from the right side of the engine on cold starts or around 1,600–2,000 RPM, sometimes with timing codes.
Likely causes
- Tensioner and chain. NAM owners call it the 'death rattle'. MINI's bulletin checks chain slack and replaces the tensioner or the full chain set.
- Carbon. Owners note intake carbon buildup causes rough running and misfires, but it's a separate problem.

Shop, ideally a MINI specialist.
Useful steps
- Listen at cold start.
- Have chain slack measured.
- Don't ignore a rattle. A jumped chain ruins the engine.
Vehicle focus: 2007–2010 Mini Cooper.
Safety / mechanic note
A jumped chain can wreck the engine. Verify with a mechanic or dealer.
